Mindsize 10% Program

One of our most important core values at Mindsize is to give back. We believe strongly in giving back to the communities we work in.

As part of our mission to achieve this goal, we enable the Mindsize team to set aside 10% of their time giving back to the communities we work within. This comes in many forms, most often though through direct code contributions, helping in support forums, and organizing or speaking at conferences / meetups. While not part of our 10% Program we work to sponsor and support many of these community events as well.

Matt Mullenweg in 2014 called on businesses built on WordPress to give back 5% of their time to the WordPress community. While we do not solely work in the WordPress space, this concept is one we want to build on top of and apply to the whole of the business.

I think a good rule of thumb that will scale with the community as it continues to grow is that organizations that want to grow the WordPress pie (and not just their piece of it) should dedicate 5% of their people to working on something to do with core - be it development, documentation, security, support forums, theme reviews, training, testing, translation or whatever it might be that helps move WordPress mission forward.

Another of our core values is look beyond and to challenge the status quo. If 5% is the standard, how can take the next step beyond the status quo?

If 5% is good, then 10% must be twice as good!

10% of someones work week is about half a days work. We plan for and recommend everyone in the Mindsize team takes half a day of their week and give back to the community. It is a great opportunity to wrap up a work week, or change gears for a bit when working on a difficult project.
