Enhanced Order Statuses Are on the WooCommerce Roadmap
Beau Lebens, Head of Engineering for Woo, has published a detailed post on where WooCommerce was, is, and the direction it’s going later this year and beyond. If you have any interest in WooCommerce, it’s worth your time to read. However, we’d like to focus on a section of the roadmap that Mindsize is taking part in.
WooCommerce currently uses a single order status field to manage orders. This status is used for the state of the order itself (draft/trashed), as well as payment and fulfillment states.
Currently, WooCommerce combines order, payment, and fulfillment statuses into a single dropdown (Order Status). While this has worked well up to now for small stores, this combined order status presents issues for modern merchants.
The main issue with a combined payment and fulfillment status is that it lacks clarity and flexibility for merchants and customers alike. When payment and fulfillment details are merged into a single status, it can lead to confusion and inefficiencies in managing orders.
WooCommerce has reached out to Mindsize and Kestrel to improve order statuses for managing the various states an order can be in,including handling multiple payment options for orders and various fulfillment scenarios. These are a series of sought-after features that will make store owners’ lives a lot easier.
Patrick Garman, Mindsize CEO, explains why these features will be a vast improvement for store owners
A common point of friction in WooCommerce has been how to handle payments and shipments in orders. While the current payment and fulfillment statuses work ok for smaller simpler stores, they become hurdles to work around for complex stores, b2b, and larger businesses. Through the combined expertise and experience of the core Woo team, Kestrel, and Mindsize – the approaches we have been discussing will greatly increase the out-of-the-box usability of WooCommerce for many store owners.
We’re excited to collaborate with Kestrel and WooCommerce on this ambitious project. Keep your eyes focused on the Mindsize blog and follow us on X, Facebook, and LinkedIn for further updates.
